Chiruca Achieves the Full Carbon Footprint label

Chiruca, as a manufacturer of boots and outdoor footwear, we are a company committed to the environment, we encourage environmental efforts and we work actively in the field of sustainability.
Our continuous work to reduce our environmental impact has paid off, and we have achieved the full Carbon Footprint seal (calculate, reduce and compensate).
Our company, Calzados Fal, S.A., has been registered for years in the list of companies that calculate their carbon footprint. The carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases emitted by direct or indirect effect of an individual, organisation, event or product, in this case in the manufacture of boots.
With this seal, issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment of the Government of Spain, Calzados Fal demonstrates our participation in the registry and reflects the degree of effort undertaken by the company in the fight against climate change. The aim of this seal is to measure the environmental impact of the entire process carried out by the company in the production of CHIRUCA® footwear, to evaluate the ecological impact of products and environmental actions.
In addition to being among the companies that calculate their carbon footprint, we have worked so hard to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with carbon dioxide absorption projects that we have finally achieved our goal: to offset the carbon footprint, thus achieving the full cycle seal.
We have managed to offset 50% through the planting of the Chiruca Forest in the municipality of Bergasa, a 16-hectare forest in which 6,000 holm oaks were planted. For the 2017 Footprint, in addition to the reduction, we plan to compensate 100%, and we have thought of enriching the forest from the point of view of biodiversity, trying to imitate the native forest, planting some more species, such as rowan, oak, maple… with the holm oak being the main tree but with some other species that will give changes of colour in autumn and that will avoid the appearance of monoculture, with a total of 15,000 trees.
The seal has a dual purpose. On the one hand, it makes it easier for organisations to demonstrate their participation in the register and, on the other hand, it allows them to reflect the degree of effort they have made in the fight against climate change.
Within the label, a distinction must be made between organisations that calculate their carbon footprint and are on the path to reducing their emissions, those that are already reducing and those that are offsetting. The label, therefore, allows us to identify three levels of participation: calculation of the carbon footprint, its reduction and its compensation. We, Calzados Fal, have achieved the complete cycle.
